Hello- My name is Mrs. Christen Pelletier. I am a returning teacher to Shaffer Elementary School this year. I am teaching 5th grad. In addition, I am also teaching an art elective to the upper grade students.
I have been a teacher in Lassen County for ten years. I earned my Bachelors of Science credential from Humboldt State University and Excelsior University and my teaching credential from Simpson University.
I look forward to getting to know all the parents, guardians and family members of the students from Shaffer Elementary School. Please feel free to stop by my classroom when you are on campus. I am located in room #4.
About Our Class
Our class is learning…
5th grade Language Arts is diving into the new curriculum, Benchmark. The students are crossing the History, Science, and even Math curriculum while learning and studying Language Arts. Through the first unit, which is titled “Why do laws continue to evolve?” the students will learn about American history and government , including the Constitution, while developing their language skills. The students will be developing their writing and research skills through research and projects based assignments. The students will also collaborate in groups, periodically, to participate in activities that develop their listening, speaking, and writing skills. The students are reading books that connect to their ELA curriculum and will soon participate in a class novel. I have assigned daily reading homework of 20 minutes per day. They have a weekly reading log to complete which is due on Monday.
In mathematics, the students are jumping into fractions. They are studying the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. In addition, the students are learning the concepts of converting fractions to equivalent fractions and reducing fractions. As it is difficult, I am keeping my eye on all of them!
In Science, we will soon be using the new Science Lab! Yea! The students are finishing the “Planting Plants” unit and will be starting a unit on “Wolves: Survival and the Ecosystem.”
In History/Social Studies, we are studying American government. This crosses the curriculum of American history and government in History and Language Arts as well as covering 5th grade CA standards.
The daily schedule is as follows:
8:15-10:00 English/Language Arts
10:00 – 10:15 Recess

I am very excited to be the Shaffer School 5th grade teacher! This grade level grade is an important time in learning and life.
